The Four Agreements Summary (Plus PDF)

The Four Agreementsby Don Miguel Ruiz Paperback

The Four Agreements has lots of wisdom from our history but the one that sticks out the most is “how we all should question our belief”. Miguel Ruiz has taken all the learning from the ancient Toltec wisdom and packed everything in a simpler way in his book which makes you think “life is in the present”.

I’m the biggest fan of history books because they teach something new in a simple way.

Now, lots of old history books are kind of hard to read and understand and this is where authors like Miguel Ruiz comes in and teaches everything in simple language.

So today let’s explore the ancient Toltec wisdom in a simpler way.

Life’s Last Edit by Rahul Makwana

Think of it as a self-help bible—not just a collection of lessons, but a guide to transforming your life.

The Four Agreements Summary

As you have guessed, the book has The Four Agreements which goes like this: Be Impeccable With Your Word, Don’t Take Anything Personally, Don’t Make Assumptions, and Always Do Your Best.

So yes, we will talk about each Agreement in the movement but before that, let’s talk about a few takeaways that the author wants you to apply in your life.

  • It’s about time: The truth is everything on this earth has 24 hours, so live your life as if this is your last day. This will give you a whole new perspective. You will be starting to see other people like you see yourself.
  • Forgive Because You Can: There is no way to be upset about anything. If someone uses bad words or says anything that hurts your belief then, keep in mind, those are just words. So forgive everyone but start with yourself because you can.
  • Beliefs are not an end game: If you believe in something that doesn’t mean, it will be true. So this is that movement when you start to question your beliefs because that’s the healthy way to live a life.

Think Before You Say

There are people who say lots of things because they like to talk, I mean, a lot but whatever they’re saying doesn’t make any sense.

To put it simply, don’t be that guy or girl who just likes to talk but the word they’re speaking doesn’t make any sense.

Be that person who uses words when they know, whatever they’re speaking is useful, true, and will make an impact.

This is like Introverts, they don’t like to talk a lot but when they talk, they will make sense.

This way, people will understand that, okay, Rahul doesn’t say much but when he says something about something, he makes sense.

This will create value and people will love to hear your thoughts because they know, this guy or girl says impactful things.

Words Are Words

There is no need to take everything personally. If someone says some bad things about you whether it’s about how you look, how you dress up, or how you talk.

Just let it go because the most important thing here is, you love yourself. So it doesn’t matter, if someone says something.

What matters is “How do you see yourself”.

So keep in mind that words are words whether they’re bad or good and they shouldn’t affect your way of living.

You should not look into the mirror and say “Yes, I’m a bad person, I don’t look good, I don’t have hair, I don’t know how to speak properly, and so on”.

Once you become aware of yourself and see yourself without any sort of filters, you will stop giving F about people’s opinions.

Assuming is not a Good Habit

If someone committed a crime and the police don’t have any sort of evidence then a court will free that person.

The court doesn’t Assume that X person has committed a crime and he or she needs to go to jail.

The court will ask for evidence.

In other words, most of the court relies on facts rather than Assuming.

In the same way, if something happens in someone else’s life and you’re blaming one particular person because you feel like he or she is lying, on the basis of your feelings then it’s not good at all.

You need to see the facts, it doesn’t matter if you hate that person or you have a past or something else. You always need to see everything as it is rather than rely on your feelings.

Feeling changes as per the circumstance. Sometimes, feelings do give you a good path but sometimes, they might guide you toward the wrong ones as well.

So before you Assume, see the things as it is and then take action.

Do Your Best

This is the best advice anyone can give you, do your best all the time but how? That’s the big question…

Why not start by accepting yourself?

See what are your Pros and Cons. In normal words, see what you’re good at and where you need improvement.

Self-improvement is a must if you want to live the best life. You can’t repeat the same mistake again and again and expect different results.

So do the best at what you’re good at, whether it’s writing, sports you love to do, singing, or anything else. Give your 100% and see where you need improvement and work on it.

As James Clear says “improve 1% every day”.

Even when you feel like you know everything about the skill you have, still, search where you can improve because the reality is you don’t know everything about anything.

Just monitor yourself and look for improvement.

The Four Agreements Lessons

  • No one wants to hear your thoughts, that’s the reality but if you speak facts and if those facts make an impact in someone else’s life then people will love to hear what you want to say. So don’t just say random things and think twice before you speak a word.
  • Keep in mind, words are words and if you don’t give meaning to those words then they won’t bother you. So Don’t give an F about what people are saying about yourself. Just Be yourself.
  • Always, rely on facts rather than going by your feelings.
  • Hard work is necessary but making improvements in everything is a must, so be a better version of yourself every day. Don’t just stop in the middle and accept your current self because you can be better.
  • Time is running and it won’t stop for you. So respect the time and get the most out of it because time will never come back.

The Four Agreements Quotes

“I will no longer allow anyone to manipulate my mind and control my life in the name of love.”

“Every human is an artist. The dream of your life is to make beautiful art.”

“There is a huge amount of freedom that comes to you when you take nothing personally.”

“You can have many great ideas in your head, but what makes the difference is the action. Without action upon an idea, there will be no manifestation, no results, and no reward”

“Also, go inside and listen to your body, because your body will never lie to you. Your mind will play tricks, but the way you feel in your heart, in your guts, is the truth.”

“Humans punish themselves endlessly for not being what they believe

they should be. They become very self-abusive, and they use other people to abuse themselves as well.”

“Imagine living your life without the fear of being judged by others. You no longer rule your behavior according to what others may think about you. You are no longer responsible for anyone’s opinion. You have no need to control anyone, and no one controls you, either.”

“Self-rejection is the biggest sin that you commit”

“Not enjoying what is happening right now is living in the past and being only half alive. This leads to self-pity, suffering, and tears.”
