Social Media is a great tool to archive lots of things whether it’s money, fame, or anything else. You just have to use it the right way.
That being said, this is 5 of 10 Articles of the Productive Mindset Series and today we’re going to talk about “Harsh Reality of Social Media”.
Life’s Last Edit by Rahul Makwana
Think of it as a self-help bible—not just a collection of lessons, but a guide to transforming your life.
Harsh Reality of Social Media
When I was watching the social diploma documentary by Netflix, the one thought I had was “Social media or even ad companies” will do whatever it takes to earn money which is all good because they’re here to make a profit.
Those who understand social media will know, it’s a great tool to maximize your reach to the world, and those who don’t will use it for time-pass.
This is another reason why brands like Tik Tok have become prominent and the same has been followed by brands like YouTube and Instagram because that’s where people want to spend their time.
Also, these big brands have numbers and they will do what the numbers are saying.
So you have to know what you’re doing on apps like Instagram, Youtube, Twitter, Facebook, or other short video apps.
You have to be aware of where you’re spending your time.
If you’ve been watching Instagram Reels for the last 30 minutes then ask yourself, what did you learn and if you don’t have an answer then you have to make yourself aware when you do the same next time.
You always have Choice
Look, you don’t need to use any social media app and that’s the truth.
Think for a second, why you want to or you’re using social media in the first place.
It could be because your friends are using it, you want to share what you’re doing with the world or you’re feeling left out.
Talking about myself, I would never use any social media apps, if I wasn’t earning money from them.
I don’t use Instagram to watch reels, I use it to upload reals, images, and stories because that’s what my website and YouTube require.
Now, it makes sense to watch YouTube that adds value to your life but if you’re watching Roast videos then that’s not a good use of time instant watch stand-up.
These days, reactions are getting popular and there is nothing wrong with it. The problem is, here, you have to realize that reaction videos are not productive at all.
You always have choices as to what to watch and what not to.
Choose one and stick to it.
Addiction is Real
You heard it right, social media is designed to make you addicted. It’s the same as if you want to drink coffee or have s*x.
First, you have thought that I want to drink coffee and that will excite you even before you drink a coffee. That feeling of drinking coffee is something else than drinking the actual cup of coffee.
Social media is the same, whenever you have free time, you will think of scrolling on Instagram or Twitter and once you open the app, these apps will try their best to keep you inside.
You don’t get addicted in one day but if you keep coming back to the app every day for 30 minutes then after 10 days, you will automatically open the app.
This is the same as drinking alcohol or coffee or even drugs.
Once you do it a few times, your mind will crave it and force you to either open the app or drink coffee.
Addiction doesn’t happen when you’re happy, it happens when you’re at your low.
So whenever you feel like “I don’t know what to do with life, I want to do this but I don’t want to, I don’t have money, and so on”
This will be a tough time of your life and this is also the time when you have to be aware of everything you do.
Here if you take one step in the wrong direction then that path will follow you for a long time.
Exercise for the day
If your screen time is more than 1 hour, then ask yourself, what I’m doing with my life and how can I improve it?
Monitor what kind of apps you have been using and for how long.
Even better, stop using social media apps for only one day and see what you do in those free hours. When do you crave it, and at which specific time feel like using the apps?
Key Takeaways
- You never needed social media apps in the first place.

Wrapping Up
Lastly, I just want to say one thing, sit down for a minute and ask yourself, why the f*ck you’re social media app and why you’re wasting your time on it?
I have said many times that there is no need to use social media but still, if you want to use it then don’t use it all the time. You don’t have unlimited time.
That being said, in the 6th Article of Productive Mindset, we’re going to talk about the popular law called “Parkinson’s Law”.
