Quiet Summary

Whether you’re an Introvert or extrovert, you should read Quiet by Susan Cain because it gives you a clear idea of how both of these people think.

Let’s say you’re an Introvert then you should learn how extroverts behave and think. On the other hand, if you’re an extrovert then you should learn how an Introvert thinks and behave with people.

The reason is simple, if you’re an extrovert then there will be a chance that your friends, Wife, or any of your family members will be Introvert, so it’s your responsibility to learn and act accordingly. You should never push them to be like you because they’re not you, so let them the way they want to live.

Now, before we talk about core lessons from the book, let me explain the definition of Introvert and extrovert to those who don’t know.

Introvert: Introverts prefer to stay at home, they don’t like to go to parties, they usually have one or two best friends, they don’t like to talk too much, they can also listen to other people for hours, they can stay on one problem for a longer time and they have more patience.

Extrovert: Extroverts are the opposite of Introverts, they don’t like to stay at home, they will have more than 5 to 10 friends, they love to talk for hours, they don’t usually listen to other people for hours, and they lack patience.

The Quiet book focuses more on Introverts, so let me share with you the Power of Introverts.

Focus

Introverted people can stay on one problem for a longer time, just take the example of Albert Einstein, he said, “It’s not that I’m so smart, it’s just that I stay with problems longer”.

On the other hand, if you give any task to Extroverted people then they will also try for some time but if they can’t solve the problem then they will pass that problem to another person and move on to another task whereas Introverted people will solve the tasks no matter how much time it takes.

In the same way, J K Rowling was traveling on a train when she got the idea of Harry Potter she wanted to write that idea on paper but she doesn’t have a pen, and she had anxious that how will I ask someone for a pen.

The Corporate World

I don’t know whether you have noticed or not but most companies tend to hire Extroverted people because they can talk and it can be useful in presentations. Whereas, if someone asks an Introverted person to give a presentation then they will feel stressed.

So here, brands need to utilize both Extroverted people and Introverted people, they need to know what kind of people are the best for presentation and working on a new idea for hours.

They don’t have to force Introverted people to be like Extroverted people because that’s where they will feel the fear.

In the same way, if you’re in college then professors tend to call Introverted people on stage for a speech and that’s where the fear of public speaking comes into the mind of Introverted people.

The professors need to deal with Introverted people differently and they can’t just throw the person on the stage directly.

Western Cultures

If you’re from India like me then you may have seen that in Western countries people are sort of Extroverts and there are many Indians who want to be like them because they feel, it’s cool.

Just watch some of the popular teenage American TV shows, it shows you that being more social will get you girls and people will like you more whereas being Introverted is weird.

The same mindset has been building for years and it’s the right time that we have to believe that, there is nothing wrong with Introvert and spending time alone.

People want to become more social because that’s what top best colleges are telling them to do otherwise they feel, they will be left behind, and no one wants to be left behind.

So stay away from Western Cultures and live the life you want to live.

Depth

Introverted people mostly have one or two best friends, they don’t feel the need to have five or ten friends. But the friends they have are very close they’re like family whereas Extroverted people will have tons of friends but sometime when they need help, non of their friends will show up.

The same way,

Introverted people can sit quietly in your corner and do their work for hours whereas Extroverted people will walk around after 30 or 40 minutes of work, they’re either talking with their friends or using a smartphone.

Quiet Review

As I have said, it doesn’t matter whether you are an extrovert or an Introvert, you should read Quiet by Susan Cain because it gives you a clear perspective from both mindsets. After reading the book, you will never force someone who doesn’t talk much to force to talk, and you will understand the mindset of the person you’re talking to.
